What to Eat

Sometimes no matter how much you wash your hands, drink water, and bundle up outside, becoming sick is still inevitable. Once you do get sick, which happens to everyone at some point or another, it's important to know what to eat to not make yourselves feel worse.

As strange as that sounds, eating bland, flavorless foods are much easier for your body to digest. This includes avoiding anything that is too salty, spicy, sweet, or just has too many ingredients. Luckily that makes cooking for yourself much easier. Eating in small portions, and not pushing your body will allow it to focus on getting better and not feeling worse. A couple of my go-to's include:

1. Scrambled eggs

2. Saltine crackers

3. Plain Yogurt

4. Warm Broths

All of these are super easy to come by both on and off campus!

The first recipe that everyone should know is how to make homemade chicken noodle soup. Yeah, Campbell's is fine, but everything is better homemade with fresh veggies. Plus it's easier to make a bulk batch to have on hand whenever you start to feel a little under the weather.

· 1 tablespoon butter

· ½ cup chopped onion

· ½ cup chopped celery

· 4 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth

· 1 (14.5 ounce) can vegetable broth

· ½ pound chopped cooked chicken breast

· 1 ½ cups egg noodles

· 1 cup sliced carrots

· ½ teaspoon dried basil

· ½ teaspoon dried oregano

· salt and pepper to taste

1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter.

2. Cook the onion and celery in the melted butter until just tender, this take about 5 minutes.

3. Then pour in  the chicken and vegetable broths and stir in chicken, noodles, carrots, basil, oregano, salt and pepper.

4. Finally, Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes before serving.

The next easy recipe is for some upgraded toast. Regular wheat toast with butter may be fine at first, but it's not as filling as it could. Here's a way to spice it up to fit your preferences, while still being kind to your sensitive stomach.

· 1 peach, or your favorite seasonal fruit

· 2 slices of your favorite bread, toasted

· 2 T of your favorite nut butter

That's it! This gives you protein, whole wheat (if you so choose), and fruit! What more could you need.

Hope this helps everyone feel better and prepare for winter!
